BMC Tremadog climbing festival

by Nick Smith 26th March 2007

The BMC invited me along to photograph this weekend-long climbing festival at Tremadog, North Wales. Considering it was March, the weather was great, and the emphasis was on 'gardening' and cleaning up some overgrown routes, as well as ticking a few classic routes. An onsight attempt of 'Strawberries' by James McHaffie had the climbing paparazzi out in force!

The festival was the first opportunity to use my new Canon EOS 5D camera, a 12.7 megapixel full-frame dSLR, and I was very impressed with its performance. Not much bulkier than my old 20D, the controls are very similar, but the large bright viewfinder and full-frame sensor is a huge upgrade. Being able to use the 'true' 24mm end of my walkaround lens gave me some great opportunities to show Tremadog's multipitch routes in real wide angle :)

I stayed at Nita's B&B in Llanberis, which I can heartily recommend, and even managed to get out early one morning for a run around the slate quarries in the early morning mist. Brilliant!
